Living in Oblivion (1995)
Should I see it?
Only if you make movies.

This is a movie about making movies. Basically, it one long inside joke. This is funny if you know what they’re talking about, stupid if you don’t. If you know anything about film making you will be amused by this production, otherwise you should move on and be thankful you have a real life.

Movie Trailer: The Tracey Fragments
If there's one thing this world needs, its another mopey independent film. Ellen Page (Juno) stars in this film about...get this, (straight from IMDb):
"15-year-old Tracey Berkowitz is naked under a shower curtain at the back of a bus, looking for her little brother Sonny, who thinks he's a dog."
Yeah, this is a film that just begged to be made. Who knows, maybe it will be brilliant (it did get nominated for a pile of Genies). Maybe it will be exactly what it looks like - a bunch of depressed Canadians making an ugly movie because in the film industry ugly=important. This is precisely the kind of movies that get hailed by online critics and undergraduate dimwits as being "intelligent" and "an experience", while those living in the real world roll their eyes and shrug their shoulders.

Ellen Page is a notable young actress and, thanks to her Juno following in the States, she will bring some attention to the piece regardless if its good or not. Here's to hoping against the odds that this thing actually doesn't suck.

Finding Red Cloud (2008)
Should I see it?
Nope.

I am very lenient when it comes to low budget independent flicks. I understand the pain, struggle and trouble that comes with trying to piece together a small film without support. These self propelled filmmakers are the lifeblood of the industry and deserve more credit than they usually get.

These films come with a price. As a viewer you need to be patient with low quality sound, lighting, and yes, even acting (particularly the supporting roles). This film is lacking in all those areas. The main actors do well with the script. They aren't the film's problem, the script is the issue. The screenplay is wanting in a number of areas. It seems the screenwriter couldn't decide if he wanted to be quirky or serious. Now, it can certainly be both but not in this case. This film is a series of drawn out scenes of people making it through their mundane lives. There's nothing wrong with this but the film is also short on humor and doesn't offer deep drama. It muddles its way along without a driving force pushing the plot forward. This leads to lethargy. A firmer nemesis, or more clearly defined central conflict would have infused some much needed life into the film.

I wanted to enjoy this film. I have a soft spot for independent film. I am always going to bat for them and admit I ignore things that I wouldn't allow from better financed films. It pains me to say, this one just doesn't get off the ground.
