How many times have we seen the routine of the girl dressing up as a boy and despite the fact that she is OBVIOUSLY A GIRL DRESSED UP AS A BOY no one seems to notice?
There seems to be a presumption that since she is related to Mozart that she must have some genius for composing and it's just because of gender roles that she's not able to prove herself. Cuz y'know genius is hereditary...or not.

I made the mistake of renting "Copying Beethoven", which had a similar premise - talented female musician and composer who is discriminated against in her chosen field only because she is a woman.
ReplyDeleteThese movies remind me of the WW2 gung ho jingoistic movies made during the war and immediately afterwards. In this case it's the culture war that's getting the propaganda boost. When you holding power by splitting every class/race/sex from each other, you need to constantly remind "your" groups just how badly they have been treated and which political philosophy is the one dealing hot vengeance to the former oppressors.
As it turns out, the actual events of "Copying Beethoven" were associated with a male copyist, not female. But when you're supporting a war, needs must when the facts get in the way.
